Butternut Box and Sensitive Stomachs
A sensitive tummy changes everything about feeding — the food, the portions, the transitions. Here's what owners of delicate digesters should know about fresh, gently cooked food, plus the bit where I insist you talk to your vet.
Why gently cooked food may suit sensitive tummies
- Simple, recognisable recipes. Real ingredients cooked slowly at low temperatures — the opposite of a mystery-meat ingredient list you need a chemistry degree for.
- Pre-portioned packs. Consistent amounts at consistent times, worked out for your dog — routine is a sensitive tummy's best friend.
- Soft, moist texture. Gentler to eat and digest than hard, dry pellets, and easier for older dogs or fussy chewers.
- No grey filler dust. If you're trying to identify what's upsetting your dog, a short, recognisable ingredient list makes that conversation with your vet much easier.
Owners often tell me the first changes they notice are better poos and less scratching. Every dog is different — but digestion is where gently cooked food tends to earn its keep.
Switching safely: go slower than you think
- Take 7–10 days. Start with a small spoonful of fresh food alongside the current food and increase gradually.
- One change at a time. Don't switch food, treats and routine in the same week — you won't know what worked.
- Keep a simple food diary. Note what they ate and how they seemed. Patterns show up fast.
- Watch the treats too. A sensitive tummy doesn't care that the dinner was perfect if the treats are chaos.
Please read this bit: fresh food is not a medical treatment, and nothing here is medical advice. If your dog has a diagnosed condition, ongoing diarrhoea or vomiting, sudden appetite changes, or you're worried about anything at all — speak to your vet before switching foods. Fresh food supports good vet care; it doesn't replace it.
